This elegant cheroot holder is made from sterling silver. Marked H. P. (unidentified) , Birmingham, it features an elaborate engraved decoration. It has a tapering cylindrical form with a hinged cap.

A cheroot is thin a cigar, open at both ends and sometimes slightly tapered. Cheroots originated in India and gained popularity among the British during the peak of the British Empire. Cheroot is derived from the Tamil word ‘curuttu’ which means rolls. Cheroot holders were used during the 20s, 30s and 40s. They prevented ash from falling on clothes. Often made from silver. jade or bakelite or they were used as a decorative fashion statement.

This antique cheroot holder is 7.5 cms in length.
