Set Of French Antique Scales

$290.00

These beautiful French antique scales have been made from cast iron and brass. The cast iron base is silver in colour. The top of the scales is marked ‘FORCE’ and ‘10 KILOG’. There are two flat brass pans. These scales are known as Roberval scales.

The earliest scales date back to around 2000BC, where they were discovered in Egypt. In 1669 French mathematician, Gilles Personne de Roberval presented the Roberval weighing scale to the French Academy of Sciences. This revolutionised the concept of weighing with scales. The Roberval scale was a weighing scale with a parallelogram frame attached to a vertical column. This structure had freely moving sides with pans placed on the vertical beam. The design of these Roberval scales, meant that they would be balanced regardless of where the sample and weight were placed in the pans, as long as their masses were the same. The sample could be placed anywhere on the pan. Many of the antique French scales we see today are examples of Roberval scales. They were used widely as commercial weighing machines.

These lovely scales are an enduring piece of history. They are quite heavy due to the cast iron component. They are approximately 43 cms in length, 8 cms in width and 22 cms in height. The pans measure 22 cms across. These decorative old Roberval scales look stunning as part of a French provincal decor. They can be filled with fruit or other kitchen items to create a warm, rustic look.
